Case Study: Ensuring 24/7 Operations at KVVU

Trust me, the investment will pay for itself in no time...

In Fall of 2023, Las Vegas's KVVU suffered a brief outage after a fiber cable had been severed outside of their facility. Doug Soule, KVVU’s Director of Production and Master Control Operations, said they began “looking for a system that could give KVVU some redundancy from our Master Control Hub in Atlanta.” Already familiar with Softron solutions such as AMP Server, and MovieRecorder, KVVU chose Softron’s OnTheAir Video Master Control solution as a backup.

To make the transition seamless, Softron reviewed the existing traffic log files to make the OnTheAir Video playlist compatible. At KVVU, “the install process was pretty simple,” Doug said. “We just had to buy a Mac Studio, a rack for the Mac Studio, and run a few cables.” Softron’s open REST API allowed the KVVU team to design their interaction. “We created a button on our DNF Panel to activate when we have to put OnTheAir Video on-air.”

During the CrowdStrike outage...OnTheAir Video kept us on air...

Several on-air incidents had been avoided with OnTheAir Video, but the biggest was yet to come. “During the CrowdStrike outage, we realized our Atlanta hub was having issues, and there was no guarantee for them to air programming at midnight when we got out of local news.” Realizing the potential issues, Doug switched over to OnTheAir Video.  “We set our OnTheAir Video to begin at midnight with a hard start on the playlist.  OnTheAir Video kept us on air for four hours in the overnight with airing our syndication programs and local commercial breaks.”

“OnTheAir Video saved us,” said Doug Soule. “I highly recommend Softron products to others. They make all of the interfaces very user friendly.  Trust me, the investment will pay for itself in no time, and they have great customer service no matter the issue.”
